I hope you are well.
Over six months have passed since the UK went into lockdown, and we’ve moved into a confusing period of transition. For most of us, thinking back to last September is almost like remembering a different world. Those of us who still have work are carrying it out online, and many people have lost their hard won careers almost overnight. The situation is, as we have been repeatedly told, ‘unprecedented.’
Much of what we were formerly accustomed to went unnoticed and unappreciated. In the words of Joni Mitchell, ‘Don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone…’ No one would wish to gloss over the tragic loss of people whose death was caused, or hastened, by Covid. But the question remains for all of us: Where do we go from here? And the answer is a resounding ‘We don’t know.’ No one knows. The emergence of a world wide pandemic has forced us to acknowledge our collective helplessness. But as Dr Ian Malcom says in Jurassic Park, ‘Life finds a way,’ and so we carry on.
Today, more than ever, we need to be able to take a break from reality, and find a respite in music, art, and my particular escape route, fiction. In a worrying reality, the challenges faced by Geraldine Steel take me away from the issues we are all facing. You may say I am burying my head in the sand when I slip away to another world, whether one of my own imagination, or those created by other writers. But the real world will still be there when I put my book down. So please, join Geraldine as she hunts down another killer in a fictional world where Oscar Wilde’s rules still apply, ‘the good ended happily, and the bad unhappily. That is what fiction means.’
On that note, I want to say a big thank you to those of you who bought Deadly Revenge! We reached the Top 100 in the Kindle charts which, at book 14 in the series, is an amazing achievement and I’m very proud and grateful!
